Martial Arts

Students enrolling in courses taught at UM's Fitness and Recreation Center must present a Griz Card validating that the Campus Recreation Fee has been paid for that semester.

  2. Grading Policy strictly enforced- classes missed prior to and after late registration count towards total absences allowed.

Beginning Tai Qi

This class is an introductory on emphasis on basic stance, breathing, and relaxation techniques through the practice of the first section of the long form Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. Its methodic movements offer excellent isometric exercise with meditation. Potential benefits are stress-relief, increased stamina, balance, focus, and self-confidence in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Loose fitting comfortable clothing, light-weight sport shoes or barefoot.

Martial Arts

  • Learn the codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a number of reasons: as self-defense, military and law enforcement applications, and mental and spiritual development.
  • Explore a variety of criteria, including:
    • Techniques taught: unarmed type of combat (grappling vs. striking; stand-up fighting vs. ground fighting)
    • By application or intent: self-defense, sport, choreography or demonstration of forms, physical fitness, meditation, etc.

Nia

  • Learn the mind/body physical conditioning program that initially stood for Non-Impact Aerobics, a health and fitness alternative that emerged in the '80's, and evolved to include neurological integrative practices and teachings.
  • Combine martial arts, modern dance arts and yoga in a workout set to music
Beginning Judo

A foundation course for the sport, martial art, and self defense system of Kodokan Judo, the oldest of the modern martial arts, and the first martial art to become an Olympic sport. No prior martial arts experience required. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate dress.

Beginning Tae Kwondo

A foundation course for the modern Olympic sport of Tae Kwondo, one of the most popular and athletically challenging martial arts in the world. No prior martial arts experience required. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate dress.


Conditioning for Martial Arts

An intensive conditioning class for serious athletes and serious amateur athletes, designed around a Tae Kwondo sport training curriculum. No prior martial arts experience necessary. Course meets first half of semester, 4 hours/week. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Appropriate dress.

Mixed Martial Arts

  • Learn the sport that allows both striking and grappling, both standing and on the ground, using techniques from other sports and martial arts.
  • Incorporate multiple martial arts into an individual style

American Kenpo

  • Learn the martial art characterized by the use of quick and powerful strikes delivered from all of the body's natural weapons, powered by rapid stance transitions, called "shifting."
  • Learn basic attack responses, which comprise a larger system taught through scripted scenarios, that allow a platform to share concepts and principles emphasized in teachings.
Yoga & Meditation

A beginning yoga class focusing on postures, breath and meditation. Classic yoga poses and work with the breath to form the foundation for meditation. Principles of seated meditation are introduced and practiced. Appropriate for all fitness levels. Equipment Needs: Mats are provided, loose clothes, bare feet.


Introduction to Yoga

A beginning class which introduces classic yoga postures. The focus is on correct alignment, modifications for injury or stiffness and increasing strength and flexibility. This class moves at a slower pace but expect to work hard. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Mats are provided, bare feet required.


Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga

A beginning class introducing Ashtanga yoga to students new to yoga. Ashtanga yoga is a flowing series of poses designed to create strength, flexibility and balance. Modifications are taught for injury and stiffness. Ashtanga yoga is an ancient practice connecting breath, gaze and movement. This class is for new students interested in a more challenging yoga class. Graded Credit/No Credit. Equipment Needs: Mats are provided, bare feet required.
